Early-mid 1957 Fender Precision bass in very good condition, 2-tone Sunburst, Maple fingerboard. Serial:19626. All original including the tweed case. Being a transitional Precision bass there are some interesting features compared to a '55 or '56. The control knobs had switched to flat-tops rather than domed and if you notice, the pickguard has been pre-drilled for the previous style wooden tug bar ( with just 1 screw) but the body has not. By 57 Fender had introduced the plastic tug bar with 2 screws so some early to mid '57s had the wooden tug bar with 1 screw and some, like this one, had the plastic with 2. Within a few months of this basses production, the Precision bass body and headstock design had changed to the shape we still know and love to this day.
It's very light, weighing only 8lbs 1.5oz / 3.67kg. It has a V-profile maple neck and maple fingerboard with clean frets with plenty of life left in them - they have been dressed and polished in our workshop. There's a large patch of buckle rash on the back of the body and various small nicks, dings and scuffs in the finish. The back of the neck and fretboard itself have only light play wear in the finish, mainly in the first position. The headstock has some scuffs along the top edge but nothing major as well as some small cigarette burns by the E string tuner post. All the hardware is very clean and works correctly including the truss rod. There are no breaks or repairs and everything remains structurally sound. It plays and sounds great with a nice low action. It has that really woody, earthy, thumpy tone that makes it a pleasure to play.
Fully set up with a set of flat-wound strings. It has a straight neck and the truss rod is fully operational in both directions. The pencil date in the pickup cavity reads 5/57. The neck pencil date is 6/57. Solder covers both pot dates but there is nothing to suggest they are not original. Pickup DC resistance 6.03k. Nut width 43.4 mm. Depth at 1st fret: 22.5 mm.
