1961 Fender Precision Bass, original Fiesta Red finish in very good condition. All original and 100% complete aside from the case. Aside from the rarity of an original Fiesta Red finish, this bass has to be my favourite bass that has ever passed through the shop. The tone and playability are out of this world. Supplied with 3-months warranty and 14-day returns policy.
This 1-owner bass came to me from Chris Barlow, the original owner's son. The original owner was Colin Barlow, bass player in The Counterbeats. Chris says his mum and dad would repeatedly tell the story of how Colin ordered this bass directly from the USA and collected it at the airport on arrival.
I have gone through this bass with a fine toothcomb and photographed it in regular light and under black light. There is no other paint in any of the screw or nail holes. Everything to my eyes (and nose) checks out correctly. I also had it verified by the well respected vintage guitar dealer, David Pym. (See letter) The back of the neck heel is correct as is the back of the serial plate. Colin wrote his name with a black marker pen on the end of the neck just above the date stamp and also on the back of the neck heel. Some of this marker pen has transferred over into the neck pocket.
There is light playwear and some small scuffs/dings to the finish, particularly around the edges. There's also some light buckle rash on the back. The back of the neck has wear through the finish leaving it very smooth and comfortable in the hand. The headstock has a few small scuffs/dings around the edges. The action is med/low. The truss rod functions correctly and it has a straight neck with original frets which are in great condition having been dressed in our workshop.
This bass has been fully set up in our workshop with the same set of flat-wound strings Colin had used for so many years. They're very old but in keeping with the bass and its history I have left them on. In my opinion, they only add to the beautiful character of this instrument. The pencil date on the end of the neck is 11/61. The pots have unbroken solder and date to the 43rd and 23rd weeks of 1961. The pickups have untouched solder, black bobbins and original winds.
