Late 1963 Fender Jaguar, serial L23020, Sunburst finish in very good condition. It has a tortoise pickguard and a rosewood fingerboard with clay dots. The bridge cover is missing and the mute sponge appears to be new. Otherwise all original and complete including the rare, white case. It comes with a 3-month warranty and a 14-day returns policy.
The three-tone sunburst is still vibrant with a strong band of red on the front and back. There is minimal fading under the pickguard and control covers. The L-series serial number puts the guitar as a late ’63 / early ’64 instrument. It’s likely the guitar was manufactured in ’63 but shipped in ’64.
The body finish has numerous small nicks and scuffs as well as light buckle rash and finish wear along the bottom/side edge. The back of the neck and headstock are relatively clean with only light play-wear. All hardware is original and works perfectly, including the trem arm and truss rod. The frets are in great shape having been dressed in our workshop and have plenty of life left in them. The guard is fully intact with no cracks and only minor shrinkage.
This guitar has been set up in our workshop with a fresh set of Ernie Ball 10-46, Regular Slinky strings and low action. The neck is stamped Oct 63 B. The volume & tone pots both date to the 48th week of 63. Original black bobbin pickups. Weight: 8 lbs 8 oz / 3.85 kg. Nut width: 41.5 mm. Depth at 1st fret: 20.3 mm. The Jaguar was launched in 1962 as another top-of-the-line guitar in the same vein as the Jazzmaster. Both guitars shared the modern offset body shape and distinct floating tremolo system. The Jaguar differed in its use of a shorter 24-inch scale length and stronger single-coil pickups, which were encased in notched covers to shield the electronics from external radio noise (a typical annoyance with the Jazzmasters soapbars). Both guitars integrated a unique dual rhythm/lead circuit design, yet on the Jaguar the lead circuit includes three switches: on-off for the front pickup, on-off for the back pickup, and a bass-cut switch that adds an extra capacitor to the signal.
